Sicily – Unspoilt Beauty

Terra Travels Lurgan manager Marie Murphy recently spent a week on the beautiful island of Sicily and kindly recorded some of her thoughts for us::

One of the best places I have ever visited is the Mediterraneans largest island Sicily.  It offers a natural beauty with dramatic scenery-fantastic beaches and a heritage which is unique and definatlely different from the mainland.

We travelled in June and flew into Catania direct from Dublin.  As we like to tour around we hired a convertible car picking in up at the airport (do note that driving in Sicily is not for the faint hearted). We chose to stay in the main town of Taormina in a small hotel in the centre of this quaint resort full of cobbled streets and fantastic restaurants.  At lunchtime we had our traditional “long lunches ” in a beach bar over looking the sea (slightly stoney beach) in the town of Letojanni.  Sight seeing on the island has endless opportunities and we really enjoyed the fantastic views  from the mountain top village of Castelmola above Taormina with its beautiful town square , quaint restaurants, shops and bars.

We also spent a day in Forza Argo/Savoa- reached only by driving along winding clifftop roads -but it meant we saw the bar Vitelli and the church famous for its role in the “godfather” films. This place was like a scene from that film – not a word of English spoke and you had the feeling the current Godfather may well be watching you!!

Of course we made the visit to see Mount Etna- the largest volcano in Europe with the most spectactular fireworks display you will see anywhere.

A holiday to remember , a place I will never forget.
